A Message from the President: Go Patriots!

 By Doug Ruffin
      President,
      Boston Music Coalition

Go Patriots! Congratulations to the AFC champs. The Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl to face the New York Giants. Sport has a way of bringing people together. A championship team in any market can grow the local economy. No sooner has your credit card bill come in from Christmas shopping and here we are back in the stores again just because some guy missed an “easy” field goal.

This, of course, is a music blog. So why talk about sports? Well, first it’s a sleazy way to get noticed on Google. An idea we don’t suggest you practice at home. J The other reason, and most important, is that for many years now, sports and music team up very well thank you. From the Star Spangled Banner, an old drinking song that no one could possibly sing well, But Steven Tyler did make the attempt, to the fight songs in the stands, The marching bands at high school and college football, the Super Bowl half time stage, pre game, post game music extravaganzas and the MBA All Star Week that tends to keep many music industry professional … Busy! Players themselves get in to the music game as well. Then again, some try. Remember the Super Bowl Shuffle? Frightening! J

While the hype is on for the Patriots, many fans are sure to go out celebrating in the days and weekends leading up to the big game. This is great for the local economy and music will play a great part of the celebration. It doesn’t take much for a gimmicky promoter to get a venue that would otherwise have little to do with sports on track to the Super Bowl with a so called, “Super Band – Super Saturday Night Event” at large and small venues all over New England. And that’s a good thing. It offers much needed opportunities for live music performers and a wide range of places to go to celebrate with fellow fans and great live music. All in all, music and sports play well together. Now get on out there, catch a live band and Party!  Go … Madonna!

A Message from the President

By Doug Ruffin
      President
      Boston Music Coalition

From Christmas through and including Martin Luther King Day, I am energized and inspired by the season of holidays we have had.  The best part of this past holiday season is how we plan to shape that excitement from the holidays and mold it in to something great and productive. The music of Christmas season seems magical. The determination Martin Luther King lifts the voices of all Americans. The Boston Music Coalition wants to take the magic that music brings us plus the ability music has to inspire us and create a positive sounding board for the growth of live music all around greater Boston.

We will position our selves to create interest in consumer attendance and venue support for live music. To do this, we want to show the enormous value music has in society. Our Music Beat News brand will align relevant current events with music. The series of reports we have already started about extended MBTA (local bus and subway system) hours so that musicians can perform in front of a larger audience unchained to the 12:30 transit curfew for responsible adults on weekends. Many of you saw the Music Beat News report on the Boston Music Awards. Many found that to be the most comprehensive news report on the 2011 awards events. We will continue to report on music and related issues that effect entertainment and the social capital consumers have to support the attendance of live music performances.

Our Nightlife Nexus brand with expanded listings. It has too. Starting now, our Nightlife Nexus live music listings will now be a tool for the Greater Boston Concierge association to provide hospitality guests with valuable information about live music in greater Boston. The Nightlife Nexus Live Music Listings and Music video show will merge sensibly and the world class Music News information and Music Beat News will also be combined in a manner that makes sense to everyone.

Beyond our brands is our mission to publicize live music. We are working to grow sustainability a development to publicize live music and to explore more unique ways to get the word out about live music. .. Stay Tuned! J

Music Beat News by the Boston Music Coalition

By Doug Ruffin
President,
Boston Music Coalition

Extended T Hours:

An interview with the President of the Greater Boston Concierge Association

This is a continuing series of reports from Music Beat by the Boston Music Coalition regarding the possible extended hours on weekends by the MBTA. (Greater Boston’s transit system)

If you take the MBTA’s silver line to the, “Courthouse” station, you will find one of my favorite areas in Boston. It’s by the docks where the Dinner Cruises leave to sail Boston Harbor, the world trade center and Among other things, The Boston Seaport Hotel is one of the great landmarks for hospitality, dining and music.

Betty Salemme is the Chef Concierge at the Seaport Hotel and is the President of the Greater Boston Concierge Association. She sat down with me for an interview to answer questions regarding the extended T hours and if extended T hours would help or hinder greater Boston’s hospitality, tourism, club venues and restaurants. We were also joined by Ann Heimlicher. She is also in the Concierge business and is president of Boston Spot-lite, Inc.

Music Beat:  As you know, State Rep, Sean Garballey is proposing to extend the hours of the MBTA on Friday and Saturdays until 2:00 AM. Since the T begins closing at 12:30, as a concierge, How is Boston’s social life viewed by tourists?

Betty Salemme: Boston has a lot of great choices like, “The Beehive” Many clubs, upscale restaurants and bars.

Music Beat:  Is greater Boston up to par with other major tourist destinations?

Betty Salemme: Yes, but the one complaint I hear a lot is the fact that Boston rolls of the side walks too early.

Ann Heimlicher: I agree. It could be due to the early closing of the T on weekends

Music Beat: Where in Boston do you find adult couples spending most of their social capital?

Betty Salemme: “Top of the Hub” Restaurant, Music and Bar.

Music Beat:  Let’s say the Bill passes and the T is opened until 2:00 AM. Would it cost more for restaurants to stay opened after midnight on weekends? Or, would the later T hours bring customers to restaurants after midnight?

Betty Salemme: Restaurants would be compensated by consumers who are able to stay later after theatre, music or sporting events. If you’re tied by the early T hours you may not get to see the whole game if it runs late or stay for the entire music event. As for the restaurants and venues, the employees at these locations need to get home safely as well.

Ann Heimlicher: Remember, even if theatre, for example, ends on time for consumers to go out to eat after the show, you have to make your own last call to get the train on time. Revenue is lost by people not being able to stay for that second glass of wine. And it’s true, people forget that bar staff and restaurant employees need to get home safe too. Or, if they work where the venue closes early, they too can go out after work without worrying about the early closing of the T.

Music Beat: The location of casinos has been in the news a lot lately. If casinos come to or, near Boston, how would existing non-casino hotels benefit?

Betty Salemme: Yes, more revenue. Casinos give tourists other things to do in the area such as entertainment.

Music Beat: With casinos in mind, Would it make economic sense to have longer T hours?

Ann Heimlicker: Absolutely!

Betty Salemme: Casinos are likely to have late night shows and sporting events. Casinos will bring a greater late night need for public transportation.
