John Sabastian: This is a BMCiRepoters’ Live Music Review

John Sabastian - She's A Lady

BMCiReporter, Denise, Contributed her own live music experience with singer, John Sabastian last weekend and sharess it with the Boston Music Coalition.

Contributed By BMCiReporter: Denise

We just saw john Sabastian at Kowloons Restaurant Friday night and it did disappoint.
His voice is worn, but the songs he played were our old favorites and the crowd cheered him on.

The problem was he talked more than he played. Before each song he went into a 10 minute story around how each song came to be. I was bored after the 5th story.

The Story of Dueling Pianos, A band, Great Voices and all the people who get it.

By Doug Ruffin
President,
Boston Music Coalition

I was invited to attend a special one year anniversary party for, Howl at the moon,
184 High Street
in the heart of Boston’s financial district. I have been to piano bars around town before. Some are better than others. You take one piano, a singer, a bar, a few regulars and well … you know the scene.

Enter, Howl At The Moon. Described as a, “…Destination for the worlds greatest rock n Roll dueling piano show”. That description is an understatement. Rather than a piano player singing against the tide of chatter and a few regulars assembled around the piano; the energy from the crowd is amplified by two dueling piano players who have a great sense of humor and can sing (or rather, can sang!) like no tomorrow. But if you are looking only for a lounge singer performing familiar piano songs whose intro catches all of our attention on the radio in the way a Journey or Billy Joel song can often do, you are truly mistaken. The piano playing is continuous and the music range includes pop, dance, classic rock, country and a few fun hip hop songs most everybody knows. They are backed up by a talented small band that joins the stage if the requested song calls for it. Since the show is request driven, the audience gets to interact with the piano players by handing them small prepared note sheets available at your table, on the bar and right on top of the pianos. It was my first time at “the Howl” and I was not just drawn in by the music and the friendly team of waiters; I was also welcomed by the attending crowd. No one bothers you, but you will get a smile or a friendly hello when you are singing along with the music. They have terrific drinks. At the Boston Location, they offer a reasonably priced food menu.

Chris the manager at Howl At the Moon noted the great success they had during the first year in Boston. The company launched during 1990 in Kentucky and can be found in 11 cities. The newest location, Minneapolis, will open later this year on December 1rst. I noticed that the piano players changed every so often during the night. Chris proudly introduced me to the musicians at Sunday nights’ one year anniversary party. Including Matt, Roger, Jill, Devina and Jonno. Energetic musicians looking for work can visit www.howlatthemoon.com for employment opportunities.

Howl has teamed up with Berklee College of Music for a special night of student performances. The event will take place on October 25th. Students who perform at this general public event could land a job at the howl. To register, e mail: Dan.slyker@howlatthemoon.com .

The latest news about the boston location is a new dance club, "Down" just below Howl At the Moon. Boston DJs with world wide reach often spin there including DJ Costa and Joe Bermudez. In other news, people can sign up to win a party at Howl at the moon. Visit http://www.howlatthemoon.com/ to find out how you can win!

Better yet, go there and have your self a howl of a time.

Live Music at Medieval Manor. This is a Boston Music Coalition Live Music Review

By Doug Ruffin
President,
Boston Music Coalition

I gotta’ tell ya’. This was a great weekend. Good weather, productive by day, lot’s of great music each night.

On Saturday, I went to the Medieval Manor. Ann from Boston Spot-light Inc, The Concierge Specialists, invited me to attend with friends and business leaders. What a time we had. If you have not been to the Medieval Manor, May I suggest you go. If you have been their during the 39 year history in Boston; Well then, Lords and Ladies, you most definitely will want to return. For the king has ruled for a merry night out for a feast, ale and song.

The Medieval Manor Theatre Restaurant, located at
246 East Berkeley Street
in Boston, is an experience that transports you in to the past. From the very moment you enter the door. The candlelit lighting, the costumes, the way you are greeted and the music instantly removes you from the present but uniquely encourages you to party. That is … of course, if the King permits it.

The dinner theatre show includes a guitarist known as “Minstrel Bill”. He described the music to me as, “British-Isle Celtic”. He does a great job of setting the mood and performing. The women in the cast sing beautifully. Ivy sang a solo fit for any king of the music industry and she elevates her audience with her voice and professionalism. Josie, Chloe and Molly also act and sing at a level of legitimate theatre on Broadway. You are not only entertained when they all sing, you feel honored.

All the Lords and Ladies attending the Medieval Manor will enjoy a great feast, ale and even the King. I, as you will, also enjoyed the music.

Music is Ever Changing and the News is Always New

By Doug Ruffin
President,
Boston Music Coalition

Music has this great way of changing and arranging. Trends may come and go, genres change in popularity But you can count on two things. First, genres may change but they never die. The second, in order to stay on top in today's music world, you need music news in order to stay on top of everything music.

The Boston Music Coalition has already become the one-stop source for news and information for leaders in the music industry who seek dependable news about local, national and international music.

Consider the Boston Music Coalition home page with the top music headlines. Did you know beyond the headlines we have a Boston Music Coalition News room? It offers local music news covering a variety of genres and not to mention top album sales. The news about Rihanna singing on Coldplay’s album has already been announced in the news room. Beyond the headlines and the news room is an up to date blog with updates in music related events around greater Boston and live music reviews. We can even alert you on blog updates. To follow us, go to the upper right of this page. It’ll take ya’ 10 seconds. We'll take care of the rest. :)

You can also click “Music News” on that blue nav bar on the top of this page. See it? Go ahead, click on and stay on top of the music world. Anyone wanting to stay on top of the music world can depend on the news room and this music scene blog from the Boston Music Coalition.
