Music Scores at the Independent Film Festival in Boston

By Doug Ruffin
President,
Boston Music Coalition

In years gone by, fans of independent film had to search far and wide to find that small art house movie theatre willing to present the latest independent film. Today, Independent film has grown. It has a larger fan base and improved distribution. Since this is a music blog, why would the Boston Music Coalition want to present a blog about film? Independent film … no less.

Usher in the 2011 independent film festival running now through May 4’2011 throughout Boston. Attendees will find several films and documentaries to screen throughout the week. The Independent Film Festival or easily remembered as the IFF did not forget the music this year.

In all, four independent documentaries scale the issues and love of music.

Here are the information links to the four music documentaries being screened during iFF Boston.

Music, Art and Technology get “Together” in Boston

By Doug Ruffin
President,
Boston Music Coalition

Boston has a unique diversity in music. Name a genre and you can find it on the radio, in a club venue or the many live performances found throughout greater Boston. This week, now through April 24th, electronic / dance music, art and technology converge to create one of the best music festivals in the region if not the country. It’s called, “Together”.

If you love music, want to perform music or would rather remix it, the Together festival is for you. Daytime events such as panel discussions ranging in topics from the creative economy to live instrumentation will bring world class music industry professionals together with the public to discuss, learn and network. In addition to that, Music Studio Direct will present, “The Together Remix and DJ Awards”. Every night during the Together Festival, ticket holders can gain admission to several venues and events throughout Boston. In all, More than 75 events will take place this week during Together.

This is the second year for “Together”. The festival has area businesses, educators and media participating with them. Companies like Bacardi, SoniVox and Zipcar, educators such as MassArt and Northeastern University along with top major market media including the Boston Herald newspaper and WZBC radio.

All of this excitement has once again caught the attention of the Mayor of Boston who wrote a letter in support of the Together Festival last year. This year, Mayor Thomas M Menino went all out and wrote a proclamation for the festival. David Day, the creative director for Together said, “Last year, we received a letter of support from Mayor Menino, but this year, we are even more humbled by his designation of Together Boston Day, being the Sunday before the festival from here on out.” While happy about the Proclamation, MR Day expressed gratitude towards his hard working staff, “It is most special for the people behind the scenes of the festival. From the steering committee to the street team to the panelists, the technologists and the participating promoters, this proclamation should be considered theirs and theirs alone! They should surely show it to their moms.” For tickets, schedules and more information; visit http://www.yogetherboston.com/

CD Release and a Stop in Boston for DJ Tiesto

By Doug Ruffin

In case you didn’t know, dance music and DJ culture continues to grow in popularity all over Boston and throughout the world. Hip hop, pop and alternative music artists including U2 are reaching out to dance music producers and are successfully cranking out hits faster than the beats per minute rhythmic pace of most dance music songs. Today’s top DJ brings a culture of world class stardom with major tours and a long with it, an even busier production schedule. DJs not only spin records but artistically blend the songs together and alter the speed of the song to allow one record to blend in with the next. That artistry has made it near mandatory for a top DJ to produce hits for other music talent or use the electronic energy from other music sources to “Remix” an existing song and make it, “danceable”.

That said, the most popular DJ in the world is Tiesto. And This Grammy-nominated DJ / Producer was here in Boston at Club Royale, 279 Tremont Street Boston, (April 5-6) in conjunction with the release of his latest Mix CD and to rave-up the dance scene in Boston. At a time when economics can challenge ticket sales for many performers in all music genres, DJ Tiesto sold out Club Royale not just once but two
consecutive nights … quickly.

Tiesto was born, Tijs Verwest in Holland on January 17, 1969. In the 90s, Tiesto gained popularity while DJing at a Dutch dance club called, “Spock”. He also perfected his music production skills and began working with the now legendary dance music record lable, “Black Hole Recordings”. In 2003, Tiesto broke DJ barriers and performed to sell out stadiums throughout the world. That following year, Tiesto DJed the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympics.

Tiesto continues to perfect his craft and spins in clubs, stadiums and produces for him self and others. You’ll excuse the plug, but Tiesto’s latest CD, “ClubLife Las Vegas Volume one” is available in stores and online now.

Get a taste of the “ClubLife” on Tiesto’s official YouTube Channel
